HI I am trying to find out more about a brickworks in Ashby in Geelong in the 1850s and early 1860's.
It was known as 'Brayshaws Brickyard' (source: Geelong Advertiser 2 March 1862) and it was something known as the 'Soapworks'.
In 1862 it was 1/4 acres of brick earth with a good water supply and a 4 bedroom cottage (and was up for sale).
I am hoping it proves to be David or Joseph Brayshaw's brickworks (brothers from Heslington in York, Eng).
Family story was that Joseph was 'brought out' to 'open up the New Ballarat Cemetery' and that he was a bricklayer and came from a long line of bricklayers.(Their father was actually a shoemaker and then a grocer in England, but their mother's family WERE a long line of Brickmakers so some truth to the family story).
We know that David came first in 1849, married here and returned to England 1855 and then came back in 1858 with Joseph in tow.
Joseph is definitely known living near the New Cemtery at Ballarat in 1864, and I understand there were brickworks in that area.
However David was in Geelong, and I suspect it is his brickworks at Ashby.
After the sale of this property David takes his family off to New Zealand.

Would love to find out where exactly the brickworks at Ashby where, or confirm the owner etc.
thanksJenny Fawcett

Ashby was an area in Geelong West. It is more in my wife's territory,
but her family didn't come to Geelong until the 1950's. I have a
"police map" of Geelong dated 1856. It has very little detail. I will
send you a scan off list. There is a photo of the church on Suzi Zada's
site at

OT: There is a carpet called "Ashby Brickworks":
