Hi Lisa

I'm not aware of any map of registration districts. However, I do have a 19
page document compiled by JH Tilton c/- City Library Nowra (no date but I've
had it for about 15 years or so) titled 'Where did they die.........A guide
to Place and Month of Death using the Index to Births, Deaths and Marriages
1856-1889'. It lists the registration districts, then the year and then the
numbers used by each district. Googled the title and found it in the NLA
and that it was compiled in 1992.

What do you want to know about registration districts?

cheers

Jenny

Hi Jenny

Just a general enquiry really - I'm from the north coast of NSW and
most of my research is centred around the Sydney and southern NSW
areas and I'm often confused about locations of Registration
Districts. For example, if a birth is registered in the Windsor
district - where would the family have lived? Perhaps I just need to
find a good map of NSW.

Thanks so much for your answer.

Hi Lisa

That wont always help . Why there is no map or some offical guide is a
mystery as rego areas named the same as suburbs cover a greater area
. eg Newtown covers Marrickvile Enmore Erskinville, Waverley covers
most of the eastern subs , Central Cumberland is the Parramatta area,
Granville covers Merrylands & Lidcomb as well as . And I am sure
these boundaries changed from time to time

There are detailed historic maps of electorates so what nothing for
rego areas ?

If you get really stuck ask on one of the lists .......... some one
will know or have a good guess at it

Hi Lisa

They could have lived in Windsor itself or in an outlying area, or they may
have just been passing through when the child was born, there are lots of
scenarios. The only way to be sure of where a family lived at a particular
time is to buy the certificate/s or look in other resources such as
newspapers (have you tried the National Library of Australia's newspaper
site http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home), the Sands country directory or
electoral roll. Perhaps you could join a mailing list for the Windsor area.

Good luck

I strongly suspect that Reg Districts in NSW have always been far more fluid
than say those of the UK and that this reflects our history as a young
country.

I have one family that settled and remained in the Southern Highlands of NSW
from the 1860s to the present day and have always (till just a few years
ago) been on the same farm but when I look at where children's births of the
first founding family were registered it's all aver the place in geographic
terms.

Those births vary from Berrima (the oldest and longest established
administrative centre) to 2 small villages that boomed for a time and then
faded off the admistrative map and then the births reg details move back to
being in the district of Berrima again.

Hi Jenny

Never tripped over this info before.............. Some time ago I
email the NSW BDM registry to ask about rego area names and coverage
and they couldnt help & suggested I ask a genealogist !!!

These were only in use to about 1974 when the system was centralised
to Sydney and no rego names are in the indexes now
