Good evening everyone,

I absolutely loath doing searches for war record files as I never can find
what I am looking for.

My g.g.g. grandfather Thomas QUIN/N born around 1789 in Kerry Ireland, came
to Australia in 1809 on the *HMS Dromeday*, along
with Lieutentant-Colonel Lachlan Macquarie, who became Govenor Macquarie
1st January 1810. Thomas served with the 73rd Regiment, possibility
as Sergeant when they arrived. I "believe" he was later made a Lieutenant
by the time he retired around 1814-1815.

I have found an article which states in part "

"Some of the more important records which relate to the Regiment’s period
in

Australia were filmed under the Australian Joint Copy Project and are
available* in*

major libraries in Australia. The series from which our project chose to
extract data,

are the Army Regimental Pay Lists, May 1809 to December 1815 - WO 12/8000,
WO 12/8001 & WO 12/8002."

I think the key word here is "in" major libraries, meaning I have to go to
one to view it.

Can anyone advise me please if this is the case as I am nearly 4 hours from
Melbourne.

Regards and thanks in anticipation

Dear Sally,

If you ask at your local (council) lending library, I'm almost sure they will
have a reciprocal service with one or all of the "major libraries" .
Sometimes they even have an arrangement with the SLV, especially if its
microfilm rather than books.

Since you know the microfilm reel numbers, your local librarian will be able to
find out the nearest library which holds these records.

Just as libraries arrange inter-library loans for books, so they might do the
same with microfilm.

To help your local librarian bring up this reference from SLV:

http://search.slv.vic.gov.au/MAIN:SLV_VOYAGER1917197

You appear to have quoted the microfilm numbers from here:
http://www.bda-online.org.au/files/MR4_Military.pdf
" The series from which our project chose to extract data,
are the Army Regimental Pay Lists, May 1809 to December 1815
WO 12/8000, WO 12/8001 & WO 12/8002".

As I read it, the SLV entry, "WO" I think means Public Records Office, London
"War Office"

Unfortunately, none of these reel numbers which you quoted are shown as being
held by the SLV but maybe the National Australia Library, so I suggest you
first need to find out what is the cause of the discrepancy.............. The
NLA entry seems to cover WO-12 / 8000 - 8001-8002

There are only 232 microfilmed reels that that have been filmed from the WO-12
series.

In a similar entry to the SLV, the National Library of Australia, Canberra,
catalogue says:
National Library of Australia holds microfilm master.
Filmed as part of the Australian Joint Copying Project by the National Library
of Australia and the Library of New South Wales.
Selected pieces within class have been filmed.
Public Record Office WO 12/2118-11230 (various)
Original held by Public Record Office, London.

In summary I suggest it's important to find WHAT is the correct number and WHAT
library, if any, holds the microfilm reels you want !

Save your feet and blood pressure,

Happy hunting,

Tony Moore

Unfortunately, Sally, that seems to be the case. It may be more convenient
to emgage one of the transcribing service in any capital city:

Hi Sally

Why not ring the SLV and speak to a Librarian, explain what you want, and
ask how to have these documents copied.
Whatever the cost it is bound to be cheaper than the cost of travelling to
Melbourne even if you could undertake the journey.
From Googling, I see the records are only held at three Victorian
Universities and the State Library. Having made a phone call you can then
decide on your next step.
