Hello Listers

Is there any way I can find and check the marriage details for William DRUCE
it was said he married 1854 Sarah Solway before coming to Australia on the
ship Gloriana but other sources say William Robert Druce married Sarah
Hartley in 1855 any help would be greatly appreciated as I would really
like to know which is correct

Cheers Rhonda

Hi Rhonda,

So much depends on where you got this conflicting information and were either of these from recognised sources.

It would also help if you specify which state / colony in Australia in case someone has further information.

Rhonda, where did they marry? The more details you can provide, the more likely it is that others will be able to help.

If you look at www.freebmd.org.uk, you'll find that the marriage of William DRUCE and Sarah SALWAY [sic] in Yeovil, Somerset was registered in the Mar 1855 quarter. Do you have this marriage certificate?

Still in FreeBMD, I could not see any marriage for William Robert DRUCE in the 1850s. There were 11 Sarah HARTLEYs whose marriages were registered in 1855 or 1856, but none of the husbands had a name like DRUCE. What are the 'other sources' to which you referred?

One could look at other possible sources like Ancestry and FindMyPast, but more information would help to narrow the searches in those and other places.

The marriage took place in UK he was from Somerset so they sailed as a
married couple and settled initially Patrick Plains NSW, so I need to know
how to get into UK records to find the marriage

Rhonda, civil registration of marriages began in 1837, so they are on
line. For the How, I can only repeat what others have said.

PLEASE:
(a) Put in your Subject: what you are looking for, not just Help please.
Have a look at what others have done.
(b) Keep everything in one thread; don't put the continuation in a new one.
(c) FW means you are forwarding information somebody else posted. It
isn't appropriate here. Do (b) instead.

Other researchers will love you for it.

HTH,

Doug.

Rhonda, you can access UK BMD records at the FreeBMD site I provided in my previous post. That site also explains how to order a marriage certificate from the General Register Office. Cost is GBP9.25 and the GRO generally provides a pretty prompt service.

PS It's a good idea to provide a more specific subject heading (eg, as above) -- this helps to pique the interest of other readers and helps to make the list archives more easily searchable.

Go to the General Register Office UK
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Sign in with a new account

On this site you seem to be only able to search for birth and death
indexes. Could be they haven't finished indexing the
marriage records.

There is another free site
https://www.freebmd.org.uk/search
to do a marriage search.
I put William Druce 1854 in first but I couldn't find a match (district and
page number) matching for Sarah Solway or Hartley Just remember not all
areas have been.

The birth and death indexes from the GRO are quite new and much easier to
search than the old way

Hi Rhonda,

You know the ship and if you check on State Records NSW online you will be able to find the reel number for the immigration information which may give parents of both William and Sarah. The films are not online but can be viewed at State Records at Kingswood, or if you are unable to get there, a copy may be requested from the site.

I was there last week and looked up a married couple who probably came just after they married and it had both the names including the surname of the wife’s parents.

Regards,

Pauline Newell

Hi Rhonda

NSW BDM's list a number of children to Sarah/William Druce at Tamworth. If
you know the names of any of the children, you will be sure you have the
right couple. After 1856 these certificates contain the maiden name of the
mother. When you have that you can order the marriage certificate in
England.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/Pages/family-history/family-history.aspx
go to Family Search.

Rhonda, how did you go with your DRUCE/SALWAY research? Let us all know if you had any trouble with FreeBMD or the GRO -- there are lots of people on this list who will be able to help.

Doug Laidlaw made some good suggestions about how to submit queries to this list so as to maximise your chances of helpful replies.

I have helped Rhonda before. I am quite happy to try again, off list,
but enabling posters to do their own research is better.

Added to my Research tree. There is a William Graham Druce in my wife's
tree. His daughter Esther married my wife's uncle. One never knows...
