Was it legal to have so many family members buried together?

I am gobsmacked that so many of one family were buried in a single plot in the Ballarat old cemetery.
I thought it was usually 2 adults 1 child per grave, has anyone else seen such a large burying in one plot?

Hello Jenny,
What a story ! Dont recall ever seeing any ref to the number of bodies that
can be in one grave ? Most I've come across in my own family is a gt gt
gmother, her daughter and son in law, their 2 infant sons and later a gt
grand child in a small Hertfordshire cemetery. The 3 adults died of old age.

Bye

Hi Jenny.

I have just looked throught the current Victorian Cemeteries Act
and Regulations.
There seems to be no limit on the number of burials in any one plot.
The Department Head has some regulatory powers, but I would
expect something as important as this being in the Regulations.

One of my ancestors was buried in somebody else's grave.

Doug.
