We have a marriage transscipt dated 1898 which mentions St Pauls Church (C
of E) Sydney.
Does anyone know of the current location of this church. We have searched
street maps and have only been able to locate one at Canterbury. Would this
be the one?
Please reply to this newgroup.

Dont think so. Suburb of Canterbury isnt next to the Sydney CBD
......... Alot of buildings that were churches arent any more

You could try checking in the Sands Post Office Directories for
Sydney

Dear Joseph,

I have listed below all the Anglican (Church of England) parishes in the Sydney metropolitan area that call themselves St Paul's.
(From my street directory index of Anglican Churches ) ...........

Burwood
Cambridge Park
Canley Heights
Canterbury
Carlingford-North Rocks
Castle Hill
Chatswood
Cobbitty
Emu Plains
Gymea
Harris Park
Kogarah
Lucas Heights-Menai
Mt Hunter
Seaforth
Terrey Hills
Wentworthville

None of these are actually termed "Sydney" since each of them is located in a particular suburb of Sydney. All come under the Anglican Diocese of Sydney.

If you think it's possible that the transcript could be mistaken, then I would suggest it could be St Phillips: Here is their web site:

http://www.stphilips-sydney.org.au/

The remainder of the Anglican Parishes with web pages are:
http://www.sydney.anglican.asn.au/parish.htm

To locate a place / suburb use:

http://www.whereis.com.au

To find addresses and phone numbers use

http://www.whitepages.com.au
and
put .... anglican .... in the surname
select ...... new south wales .........
select ........ metropolitan area ......
select ......... business/ government

Hope this helps,

Tony Moore

There was a St Pauls C of E Church at Redfern adjacent to the Railway line
which still can be seen today but it is now a Greek Orthadox Church I think.
My Great Uncle was married there.

I found St. Pauls C of E church by looking up on Google - Just put in St.
Paul's Church of England Canterbury NSW and it will come up. There is a
picture of it as well. It has been preserved as late as 1997 and there is a
cemetery there as well.

I sent a message earlier but it came back

Joseph,

St. Paul's CofE - Redfern. The building is still there but is no longer
CofE, which is probably why you can't locate it in the street
directory. I can't remember what denomination now uses it.

I am interested in the Redfern Church & area , is there a genealogy group
for that area ?, my time frame being around the 1850's , or any books been
printed on it .

The woman I am looking for in Redfern is my brickwall ,

She was Anne SOPER from Crantoc, Cornwall came out to Oz about 1848/49, ,
parents William & Betsy SOPER

I can't find a birth , Marriage or a death for her in the UK or Oz

She could have married someone , surname Mc Eachran ( as our Family book
states )
or the surname could be Minors .

Any help would be very much appreciated

Best Wishes Claire

Dear Claire,

If you are looking for your SOPER family close to REDFERN , then William was listed in the Sands Directory as living in Stanmore, which is very close to Redfern

You will find a William SOPER in Harrington St, Stanmore starting in 1863 see the Historic "Newtown" pages ..........
http://tinyurl.com/3dd9y

I have found that Sands Directory was horribly unreliable in its initial years when it was produced. A family can be completely missing for a few years from the directory,
even though they are still living in the same house and have never moved.

Changing council boundaries around this era also totally confuse the issue too.

To find Harrington Street use:
http://www.whereis.com.au
Use the suburb name of "Enmore" rather than Stanmore
Part of Harrington St was absorbed when Newington College was built.

Unfortunately only small parts of Sands Directory are transcribed
on-line. You have to do alphabetical look-ups on microfiche. Sorry, I'm too far beyond the never-never, and beyond the black stump to do a library look-up.

Cheers,

Tony Moore

In the assisted migrants to NSW there was a SOPER famly who arrived
here on the ship ;'Emigrant' in 1849

See www.records.nsw.gov.au

go to on line indexes ........ assistent migrants to NSw 1844 - 59

I looked up film # 2459 this morning .

This family hailed from Dorset & settled in the Hunter Valley area
around Paterson

No such surname in NSW records to 1888

( as our Family book

states )
or the surname could be Minors .
No MINORS/SOPER marriage recorded

St Pauls C of E Canterbury is still a very active church with a beautiful
cemetery in the church yards
Canterbury Family History Society has produced a wonderful book on the
cemetery
I think the St Pauls C of E Sydney would be a church closer to the inner
city itself. A phone call to head office of the Anglican church in Sydney
may be of some help to you
Best of luck with your research
Kay

The church I believe you are looking for is situated at the corner of Regent
and Cleveland Streets, Redfern. As previously posted by others, it is now a
Greek church. The intersection is called St Pauls Place.

Joseph, We were married at St Pauls, Castle Hill in 1969 which was
supposedly built by the convicts and about 110-120 yrs old at the time. It
is now a chapel at a funeral home but still exists in its original form.

June

St Pauls C of E Church, Redfern, Sydney was located at 242 Cleveland Street,
Redfern. That part of Cleveland Street is shown on the UBD Street Directory
as St. Pauls Place.
The Church is now The Cathedral of The Annunciation of Our Lady, a Greek
Orthodox Church., the address being 242 Cleveland Street, Redfern. It is
clearly marked on my street directory adjacent to the main railway line.

Oh thank you , I know she is missing there, I can't find her anywhere in
Cornwall.

The only reason I know she existed is she is named on her other 3 siblings
shipping records when they came to Sydney later . Only her first name though
.

Many thanks Claire
