Annie, neither book has an index but I've browsed Mitton and found J. M.
DURNING listed as Mayor of Grenfell Municipal Council in 1919 and again
in 1923-24. There's also a black and white photo (undated) of a group
of about 20 men standing outside a Main Street building with a sign 'J.
M. DURNING BUILDER & CONTRACTOR'. I could scan that and send it to you
off-list if you do not already have a copy.
I also browsed Bayley's book and found J. M. DURNING mentioned as the
builder of the Roman Catholic Church in 1906 at a cost of £1,633.
There's a description of the church if you're interested. The only
other mention is of James M. DURNING as Mayor of Grenfell in 1919 and
1923-24.
Other sources (which you may have already tried) are:
* Grenfell Museum & Historical Society, Camp Street, Grenfell (02)
6343 1930 -- they have lots of useful historical material; and
* Trove -- a search of the Grenfell Record 1900-1951 produced 1,698
hits for DURNING, so there's plenty of potential there!
Hope this helps.
Lindsay

Re: book "People of the Weddin Shire"
Annie, I don't have a copy of this book (Ed. Bruce Robinson & Gaynor
England, Weddin Shire Council 2001) but, if it is any help, there are
copies in the libraries shown here: http://tinyurl.com/hhpe329.
I do have Bayley 'Golden Granary ...' and Mitton 'History of Grenfell
and Weddin Shire'. If you don't have them, I'd be happy to browse for
mentions of the DURNINGs. Just let me know.
