Where do I search to find out the names of guards and their families on a convict ship. In particular I am looking for a James Molloy on the ship Fairlie in 1852 to VDL. He is in the surgeon's journal as sick. There is also a child of a guard sick with same surname Molloy. I want to see a list of who the guards were and what family travelled with them to see if it they are father and daughter. He was not a soldier, he had been discharged from the army the year before but I understand some signed up as guards (or as he says in his words he was a policeman) for their passenger to be paid for as they immigrate to the Australian area. Apart from the surgeon's journal I can find no other records about him. Hopefully there are some out there I just don't know where to look.
Thanks

Hi Evelyn,

Suggest AUS-***@rootsweb.com could be a better place to ask and/ or

Thank you for suggestions will try them. I also have found that the Alexander Library here in Perth has 3 books that are available for viewing that may have lists of guards. Just have to make the trip as they are not for loan.

Hi Evelyn,

I can't answer your question, sorry, but where did you find the surgeon's journal? Is there an index somewhere?

My GGF was a ship's surgeon, arrived 1873 on the "Great Queensland".

Thanks

Hi Tony,

I was going to suggest Log of Logs but was so disappointed to see that
someone had scanned Vol 1 and put it on Zenodo for anyone to download.

This and the other volumes of Log of Logs are still under copyright and I
hate seeing all of that dedicated work being put there for open access.

This obviously wasn't done by the author or his descendants since his death
[which certainly wasn't so long ago that it is now out of copyright] - if it
was done "officially" they would have included the other volumes.

Regards ... Susie Z

All three of the volumes are online and can be downloaded, so perhaps
whoever has right of publication has now made this possible.

Tony might like to search online

Hi Kate,

Thanks for that info - I must say I'm still surprised as there was talk of
compiling Volume 4 from his research notes after his death.

Hi Evelyn

I found the reference to James Molloy and others being ill on board
"Fairlie" but no reference to a child of that name. Where did you find it?

I found another record, highly likely for your your James but incorrect
spelling, James MOLLY is a passenger on board the "Yarra Yarra" (arrived
from England on "Fairlie") sailing from Launceston to Melbourne 1 Oct 1853.
